Arts and Crafts for Women’s Month: Celebrate the Lovely Ladies in your Life with DIY

Ah, August! It’s that special time of year when South Africa celebrates Women’s Month. A time dedicated to honouring the incredible women who shape our lives, from our beloved mothers and grandmothers to our sisters, aunts, and best friends. Here at PNA, we believe there’s no better way to celebrate Women’s Day on the 9th of August than by getting a little crafty and creating heartfelt DIY gifts that show just how much you care. We love the ladies!

Let’s dive into three delightful DIY arts and crafts projects that you can easily create at home. These are perfect for any age, so gather your family and friends, and let’s get crafty, PNA fans.

1.Hand-Painted Flower Pots

Flowers are a classic gift, but why not add a personal touch with a beautifully hand-painted pot? This project is super fun and allows for loads of creativity.

What you’ll need:

  • Terracotta pots (available at your nearest PNA store)
  • Acrylic paint in various colours
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sealer (optional)
  • Soil and your favourite flowers or succulents

Steps:

  1. Prepare your pots: Start with clean, dry terracotta pots. If they’re a bit dusty, give them a quick wipe-down.
  2. Get creative with painting: Use your acrylic paints to decorate the pots. You can go for bold patterns, delicate florals, or even inspirational quotes. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours – the more vibrant, the better!
  3. Seal your artwork: Once your paint is completely dry, consider using a sealer to protect your design from the elements, especially if the pots will be placed outside.
  4. Plant your flowers: Fill the pots with soil and plant your chosen flowers or succulents. Voilà! You’ve created a beautiful, personalised gift.

2. DIY Beaded Bracelets

ewellery is another fantastic way to show appreciation. Making your own beaded bracelets is easy, and they make wonderful, heartfelt gifts.

What you’ll need:

  • Assorted beads (find a great selection at PNA)
  • Elastic string or jewellery wire
  • Scissors
  • Jewellery clasps (if using wire)

Steps:

  1. Design your bracelet: Lay out your beads in the order you’d like them on your bracelet. Play around with different patterns and colour combinations until you find the perfect look.
  2. String the beads: Cut a piece of elastic string or wire slightly longer than your wrist circumference. Begin threading the beads onto the string. If you’re using wire, attach one end to a clasp first.
  3. Secure the bracelet: Once all the beads are in place, tie a knot in the elastic string, or attach the other half of the clasp if using wire. Trim any excess string or wire.
  4. Admire your handiwork: Your beautiful, custom-made bracelet is now ready to be gifted to a special lady in your life.

3. Homemade Scented Candles

Candles make a lovely, calming gift, and they’re surprisingly easy to make at home. Plus, you can customise the scent and colour to match the recipient’s preferences.

What you’ll need:

  • Wax flakes (available at PNA)
  • Candle wicks
  • Essential oils (choose your favourite scents)
  • Candle dye (optional)
  • Heatproof containers (like mason jars or teacups)
  • Double boiler or microwave-safe bowl

Steps:

  1. Prepare your containers: Place the wick in the centre of your container. You can use a bit of wax or glue to hold it in place.
  2. Melt the wax: Using a double boiler or a microwave, melt the wax flakes. If you’re using a microwave, do this in short intervals, stirring in between to ensure even melting.
  3. Add colour and scent: Once the wax is melted, add a few drops of your chosen essential oils and candle dye if desired. Stir well to combine.
  4. Pour the wax: Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared containers, holding the wick upright. Allow the candles to cool and set completely.
  5. Trim the wick: Once the wax is solid, trim the wick to about 1cm above the surface. Your homemade scented candle is now ready to spread warmth and joy.
